TEDDY BEAR. HISTORY AND OUR DAYS
Charming Teddy bear – at first glance, a completely ordinary toy teddy bear, which can be found in almost any house where there is a child. However, behind its external simplicity, the teddy bear hides a very strong character and an amazing fate. Only one unusual story of his birth deserves real admiration!
EVERYTHING BEGINS FROM USUAL HUNTING
In the fall of 1902, almost all US newspapers published interesting news: while on the hunt, President Theodore Roosevelt took pity on the little bear cub, which was to become a trophy of hunters that day. Among the readers, who were amused by the funny caricature, turned out to be the owner of the toy store Maurice Michtom. Maurice came up with the idea to replenish the assortment of her store with a novelty, and his wife, according to a talented sketch, recreated exactly the image of a bear cub saved by Roosevelt. The new toy made a splash, and from that moment on, all Americans had the opportunity to buy a Teddy bear in stores in their country. Mychtom has gained real glory!
ANOTHER VERSION OF THE BIRTH OF A TEDDY BEAR
Almost at the same time as in America, the Teddy bear appeared in Germany, but completely different events preceded its creation. In one of the local circuses, under the guidance of an experienced trainer, a unique “artist” gave performances – a brown bear that could do amazing tricks! The audience was delighted, and once Richard Stayf noticed an unusual stuntman. This was the nephew of Margaret Steif, known for being confined to a wheelchair, the woman became the founder of a large toy factory.
Teddy Bear with the help of Richard got the opportunity to move his paws and head (Steiff invented special mounts, thanks to which the mechanism acquired mobility).
BRILLIANT “CAREER” OF THE TEDDY TOY
The simultaneous development of events in two countries contributed to the fact that Teddy’s toys quickly gained popularity throughout Europe. Roosevelt made the teddy namesake his mascot, and was immediately successfully re-elected to the presidency. Buyers were attracted by external simplicity, behind which was hidden an unusual charm! The toy Teddy Bear became a real cult toy – fairy tales and poems were dedicated to her, portrayed in comics and sung in songs. In the first quarter of the 20th century, the Teddy boom reigned almost all over the world!
The popularity of the teddy bear faded away only by the middle of the century, and then only to flare up with renewed vigor in the 50s! Now the Teddy bear becomes the hero of television talk shows.
In the 70-80s of the 20th century, the public was struck by a new hobby: the creation of designer toys. Naturally, first of all, American, European, Russian craftswomen rushed to sew Teddy teddy bears manually. Collectible toys were exhibited in galleries; they were sold at special fairs; whole festivals were dedicated to the bears.
TEDDY TODAY AGAIN AT THE PEAK OF POPULARITY!
In many modern needlework schools, a separate science is taught – the manufacture of small and large Teddy bears. The masters who practice this craft are called “teddists.”
There is an opinion that a person who wants to buy a Teddy soft toy for himself or someone close to him simply cannot be angry and cruel. It turns out that a charming teddy bear from an ordinary toy managed to turn into a real “litmus test” that can reveal good human thoughts.
