SANKS – AN INTEGRAL ATTRIBUTE OF WINTER AMENITIES

Sledding is an essential attribute of winter fun. Today they are offered a wide range of models. They are used as a convenient means of transportation in the snow or rolling down the hills.

A LITTLE HISTORY
It is not known for certain who first came up with the tie of two poles to make simple drags. The first prototypes of sleds found by archaeologists date back to the 2nd millennium BC. Over time, they changed and modernized. They were used by the poor and the rich. In the former, they were often needed for work. Children rode on simple wooden products like modern ice sledges.

In the XII century. in the Scandinavian countries, sailing models were widely used. From the XVI century. fashion has begun to adorn the sleds of noble gentlemen with elaborate carvings and gilding.

In Russia, sleighs were valued more than wheeled vehicles. Until the end of the 17th century, royal and higher church people solemnly went to them even in the summer. They were used during wedding and funeral processions. On Shrovetide festivities, it was obligatory to ride from a hill. Children preferred small sleds. Young people and elderly people rolled down on large multi-seat models.

At the beginning of the twentieth century, sledges tried to mechanize. Engineer Cousin in 1908 adapted an aircraft engine to them. In 1935, a prototype snowmobile appeared. In the post-war period, children rode down the slides on the inflated cameras of automobile wheels. These were the first cheesecake sledding (tubing). In the 60s, sled amphibians were invented. With the advent of new materials and technologies, sledges have improved and are now represented in a wide variety.

MODERN MODELS
Sleds differ in material, construction, appearance and functionality. They are made from:

metal;
wood;
plastic.
The traditional option is an aluminum or steel base and a wooden seat. Such products are made with a folding handle, back and armrests. Runners – flat or tubular. Wooden – look colorful, but are very heavy and require special care.

The simplest plastic option is ice cubes. These are bright pads for the descent of the hill. Classic comfortable cast models made of durable, lightweight plastics are offered for babies. Often they are equipped with safety straps.

Inflatable sledges are also popular. They are made from reliable polymeric materials and must have handles.

The attention of many mothers is attracted by a sled stroller. They are a good winter transport for kids. They resemble classic strollers. Most models have small wheels attached to the rear raised portion of the runners. Transformer options are also available. In them, ordinary wheels are replaced by traditional runners. They can be used all year round. Very convenient models where the wheels extend and hide by simply pressing the lever. You don’t have to think about where to put them, for example, while shopping.

TIPS FOR CHOICE
Before buying a sled for a child, it is important to determine their main purpose. For example, not all sledges with wheels are suitable for rolling downhill. To do this, it is better to choose models with a minimum number of parts that a child can hit. For transportation, riding on flat surfaces suitable options with a convenient handle.

Other selection options:

security;
the age of the child;
carrying capacity.
For kids, seat belts are important. If the child will carry the sled on his own, then a model with a low weight should be preferred.

Choosing tubing, pay attention to the diameter, capacity. It is important to check the reliability of the seams and the handles.
